Russia’s State Duma appointed lawmaker Yana Lantratova as the country’s new human rights commissioner. She replaced Tatyana Moskalkova, who had completed her second five-year term.
Lantratova was a State Duma deputy representing A Just Russia — For Truth.
Meduza, citing sources, reported that her candidacy was backed by Andrei Yarin, head of the Kremlin’s domestic policy department, and filmmaker Nikita Mikhalkov. Those claims have not been officially confirmed.
Russia’s federal human rights commissioner formally reviews complaints about rights violations and interacts with state agencies on matters involving the protection of citizens’ rights.
