The presidents of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan urged Armenia to hold a nationwide referendum as soon as possible on choosing between joining the European Union and remaining a member of the Eurasian Economic Union.
In a joint statement, the four leaders described Armenia’s preparations for possible EU membership as a significant risk to the economic security of other EAEU members.
They also ordered a report to be prepared by December 2026 on the possible consequences of suspending application of the EAEU treaty to Armenia.
The statement came shortly before Armenia’s parliamentary election and amid a sharp deterioration in relations between Yerevan and Moscow.
