Total battlefield casualties suffered by Russia’s armed forces since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine may have reached about 1.4 million killed, wounded, and missing, according to an estimate by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, or CSIS.
The think tank estimates that between 400,000 and 450,000 Russian service members were killed between February 2022 and June 2026.
CSIS also said Russia’s monthly casualties of 30,000 to 34,000 in 2026 may have exceeded the pace of recruitment, which the center estimates at about 27,000 new service members per month.
These figures are analytical estimates by CSIS and do not represent official or precisely established statistics.
Russia does not publish full data on its military losses, and estimates from different independent sources vary considerably.
