A criminal case against Mediazona editor-in-chief Sergei Smirnov has been sent to a magistrate court in Moscow.
Smirnov is accused of evading obligations imposed under Russian law on people designated as “foreign agents.”
According to the prosecution, after receiving several administrative fines, he published four additional posts in his Telegram channels without the mandatory “foreign agent” label.
The criminal case was opened in 2024. In March 2025, Smirnov was placed on Russia’s wanted list.
Mediazona discovered that the case had reached the court on July 3. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for July 10.
Smirnov is outside Russia.
