Russia’s Justice Ministry added politician Boris Nadezhdin to the country’s register of “foreign agents.”
Nadezhdin opposes the war against Ukraine and attempted to run in Russia’s 2024 presidential election. The Central Election Commission refused to register him as a candidate.
In 2026, Nadezhdin planned to run for the State Duma.
Russian law bars people carrying the “foreign agent” designation from standing for elected office. The Justice Ministry’s decision therefore prevented Nadezhdin from continuing his campaign unless the designation was overturned.
Nadezhdin said he disagreed with the decision and intended to challenge it.
