U.S. senators unveiled an updated version of a bipartisan sanctions bill targeting Russia and countries continuing major purchases of Russian energy.
The revised text softened one of the harshest provisions of the original proposal.
The initial bill had allowed tariffs of up to 500% on imports from countries buying Russian oil, gas and other goods. The updated version provided for tariffs of up to 100% on the five largest buyers of Russian energy and included a number of exemptions.
The legislation also retained sanctions against Russian officials, financial institutions and energy projects.
The U.S. president would be given authority, under certain conditions, to temporarily waive individual restrictions.
Publication of the revised text followed the agreement reached on July 10 between senators and the Trump administration to advance the initiative.
