The Moscow City Court on July 29 sentenced journalist Daria Shipacheva to 12 years in prison after convicting her of treason.
The court also imposed a fine of 300,000 rubles. Shipacheva is to serve her sentence in a general-regime penal colony.
The proceedings were closed to the public, and the substance of the charges was not officially disclosed.
Shipacheva pleaded guilty, after which the case was heard under a simplified procedure.
Several Russian media outlets, citing sources, reported that the prosecution may have been triggered by a money transfer to Ukraine. That account cannot be confirmed from publicly available court materials and therefore cannot be treated as an established fact of the case.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian courts have handled significantly more cases involving treason, espionage and confidential cooperation with foreign organizations. Many of those trials are held behind closed doors.
