U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov that Washington would not discuss economic concessions or new arrangements with Russia while the war against Ukraine continued, Reuters reported, citing a source familiar with their meeting.
The talks took place in Asheville during a meeting of G20 finance ministers.
Russia’s Finance Ministry said the two officials discussed financial cooperation within the Group of 20 but did not mention the condition that, according to Reuters, Bessent had set.
For Siluanov, the meeting marked his first in-person participation in a G20 finance gathering since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Reuters’ account of the closed-door conversation is based on one source and has not been publicly confirmed by the Russian side.
