Russia’s Justice Ministry has added Novaya Gazeta to the country’s register of “foreign agents.”
In the publication’s registry entry, the ministry listed more than 100 people as its “participants.” They include former editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov, current editor-in-chief Sergei Sokolov, politician Lev Shlosberg and former lawmaker Boris Vishnevsky.
Being named as a “participant” of an organization in the register does not automatically mean that the individual has personally been designated a “foreign agent.”
The Justice Ministry said its decision regarding Novaya Gazeta was based in part on what it described as dissemination of false information about Russian state policy and the electoral system, publication of materials by “foreign agents,” and statements opposing the war in Ukraine.
