Russia’s Central Election Commission has canceled Communist Party candidate Nikolai Bondarenko’s registration for the State Duma elections.
The decision was based on an administrative penalty that remained in force under Article 20.3 of the Code of Administrative Offenses, which covers the display of symbols of an extremist organization.
Under Russian law, a person who is still considered subject to punishment under this article cannot be elected to the State Duma.
Bondarenko’s administrative case was linked to a Telegram post containing an image of Alexei Navalny. The politician denied that he had personally published the post.
