European Union diplomats reached a compromise on September 22 to extend personal sanctions linked to Russia’s war against Ukraine for three years.
Reuters reported that, as part of the agreement, Russian billionaires Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman were removed from the sanctions list.
The decision covers more than 3,000 individuals and entities and replaces the previous practice under which the restrictions required unanimous renewal every six months.
The Council of the EU formally adopted the extension on September 23, renewing the measures for 36 months through September 22, 2029. As part of the review, the EU did not renew sanctions on three people and one entity and removed three deceased individuals from the list.
