Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met in New York on September 26 on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
It was the first bilateral meeting between the two countries’ foreign ministers since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said the two discussed bilateral relations and the situation surrounding Ukraine.
Wadephul later said he had agreed to meet Lavrov because of concerns about European security and the need to discuss risks to shipping and food exports through the Black Sea. After the meeting, he said he saw no indication that Moscow was prepared to change course and end the war.
Lavrov, for his part, said he had heard no fundamentally new positions from the German side.
