The BBC Russian Service, Mediazona and a team of volunteers have identified by name 281,753 Russian military personnel killed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The count is based on obituaries, reports from relatives, publications by regional authorities and media outlets, photographs of graves and other open sources.
The figure is not an estimate of Russia’s total military deaths. It includes only those whose names researchers have been able to identify and verify. The actual number of Russian military personnel killed is higher than the confirmed name-by-name count.
In its latest study, the BBC also analyzed losses among individual military units.
The ten Russian formations with the largest number of confirmed deaths include the 810th and 155th Separate Guards Naval Infantry Brigades and the 76th Guards Air Assault Division.
