Moscow’s Basmanny District Court ordered Yelena Krotova, director of the charity fund “Protect Children from Drugs,” held in pretrial detention until December 15.
She has been charged under Part 3 of Article 284.1 of Russia’s Criminal Code, which covers organizing the activities of a foreign or international organization designated “undesirable” in Russia.
Law enforcement officials told Interfax that Krotova is suspected of recruiting people into the activities of the Church of Scientology, which Russian authorities have designated “undesirable.”
That allegation has not yet been considered by a court on its merits.
Krotova’s detention followed an investigation in which searches had previously been carried out at the homes and premises of people and organizations associated with the Scientology movement.
