Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asked European Union leaders to provide his country with at least €70 billion in additional funding in 2027. He made the request during an EU summit in Brussels on October 16.
According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine's total expenditure next year is expected to reach approximately €155 billion. Additional European funding is needed for defense, weapons procurement and maintaining the country's resilience amid the continuing war.
Zelenskyy described the requested amount as realistic and emphasized the need to maintain European support as Kyiv's relations with Donald Trump's administration become increasingly strained.
European leaders expressed support for Ukraine, but the summit did not produce a final decision to provide the additional €70 billion.
The discussions took place amid growing disagreements between Kyiv and Washington. Trump has criticized Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries, linking them to higher energy prices.
At the same time, Ukraine has experienced problems using the US Starshield military satellite communications system, which is needed to control certain types of drones.
Against this backdrop, Kyiv is seeking long-term financial and military commitments from its European partners to maintain its defensive capabilities regardless of potential changes in US policy.
The €70 billion requested by Zelenskyy remains a proposal from Ukraine, not an approved EU commitment.
