U.S. President Donald Trump has exercised authority granted under a new law to temporarily waive the application of several sanctions measures against Russia that had been due to take effect in the coming days.
The measures include tariffs on Russian goods and restrictions targeting buyers of Russian oil and gas. Trump formalized the decision in an executive order, citing U.S. national interests.
The measures provided for under the law have therefore not been permanently repealed: the U.S. administration retains the authority to apply them later.
Trump signed the law providing for the measures in September. It is aimed at increasing economic pressure on Russia over its war against Ukraine.
