Ukraine's General Staff has rejected a claim by Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov that Russian forces have made major territorial gains since the beginning of September.
Gerasimov told Vladimir Putin that Russian forces had captured more than 1,800 square kilometers of territory and 92 settlements since September 1.
Andriy Kovalev, a representative of Ukraine's General Staff, called the figures false. He said Ukrainian forces had retaken more territory since the beginning of the fall than Russia had managed to capture.
Ukraine also rejected Russia's claim that it had captured Dobropillia and says the city remains under Ukrainian control.
Reuters said it was unable to independently verify the territorial figures provided by either the Russian or Ukrainian side.
