St. Petersburg and the surrounding Leningrad region came under a massive drone attack overnight on October 18, sparking fires at the Petersburg Oil Terminal and the Ruchi oil depot. One person was killed and five others were injured, according to city authorities.
St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov reported fires at oil facilities and industrial warehouses in the city's Kolpinsky district. Drones also damaged residential buildings, including apartment blocks.
Retailer Ozon and technology company VK reported attacks on their facilities. According to the Associated Press, an Ozon logistics facility and a VK data center were among the sites affected.
Russia's Defense Ministry said its air defenses intercepted 1,015 Ukrainian drones overnight across 15 Russian regions, annexed Crimea and the Black Sea. The figure could not be independently verified.
Ukraine has expanded its strikes on Russian oil refineries and fuel infrastructure in recent months. Kyiv says such operations are intended to reduce the revenues and resources Russia uses to wage war.
The attack came amid disagreements between the United States and Ukraine over strikes on Russian oil facilities. U.S. President Donald Trump had previously criticized such operations, linking them to rising global energy prices.
Meanwhile, Russian forces continue to target Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Neither Moscow nor Kyiv has confirmed the existence of a mutually agreed energy ceasefire that Trump previously announced.
