Officers from Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) arrested a 53-year-old Ukrainian citizen on the morning of October 22 on suspicion of gathering military intelligence for Russian security services.
According to Der Spiegel and t-Online, the operation took place in the Oder-Spree district of Brandenburg. The suspect lived in the town of Eisenhüttenstadt. t-Online identified him as Vadym Y., using only the initial of his surname.
Investigators suspect the man of maintaining contact with Russian intelligence services through an intermediary and collecting information about the production of armored vehicles, ammunition and explosives at German industrial facilities.
He is also suspected of gathering intelligence about NATO military installations and alliance personnel.
Der Spiegel reported that the suspect had shown interest in the Bundeswehr's 45th Armored Brigade, which is intended for permanent deployment in Lithuania. The deployment of the formation, comprising approximately 5,000 service members, is part of NATO's effort to strengthen its eastern flank.
The Insider also reported details of the arrest.
Germany remains one of Europe's largest suppliers of military assistance to Ukraine. Information about defense manufacturers, weapons production and the deployment of German troops is of interest to foreign intelligence services amid Russia's continuing war against Ukraine.
However, no public evidence has yet been presented showing that the suspect transferred classified information to Russia. His alleged connections to Russian intelligence services and the nature of the information he collected remain under investigation.
There were no reports of a final indictment or a court ruling on the substance of the case at the time of publication.
