Russian courts fined eight people designated as “foreign agents” for failing to submit mandatory reports to the Justice Ministry over a period of seven working days, according to a count by the First Department rights project.
The fines were imposed on Yevgeny Chichvarkin, Yekaterina Surnacheva, Anna Golubeva, Sasha Kazantseva, Andrei Muntyan, Vladimir Osechkin, Roman Badanin and Ivan Zhadaev.
Over the same period, five other people — Timur Tukhvatullin, Slava PTRK, Yelena Nalimova, Violetta Fitsner and Yaroslav Rasputin — failed in court challenges seeking removal from the “foreign agents” registry.
These were separate administrative and court cases rather than eight new additions to the registry.
Russian law requires designated “foreign agents” to submit regular reports on their activities and finances. Repeated violations of some requirements can lead to criminal prosecution.
The tally of eight fines and five unsuccessful challenges is the First Department’s own monitoring.
