Volunteer visits to a cemetery for Gulag prisoners in the settlement of Abez in Russia's Komi Republic have become less frequent, while some relatives of those buried there are afraid to discuss their family histories publicly. A report by the project Veter, published by Novaya Gazeta Europe, describes the situation.
More than 1,600 prisoners are buried in the memorial cemetery, which covers about four hectares. A local woman named Natalia continues to look after the site, according to the report's authors.
