The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on October 29 that it had received information that an employee of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant had been killed in a drone attack. According to the information provided to the agency, the victim was a welder working in the plant's maintenance division.
The Russian-appointed administration of the plant said the employee was riding an electric scooter to work and blamed Ukraine for the attack. The IAEA did not identify who launched the drone or independently confirm the administration’s account of the circumstances.
The Zaporizhzhia plant is in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory. Its reactors are not generating electricity, but its technical staff and safety systems remain essential. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi called attacks on nuclear plant workers unacceptable and urged military restraint to reduce the risk of a nuclear accident.
