Novaya Gazeta announced on October 30 that it was ceasing operations. In a statement titled “They Killed Us,” the newspaper said it intended to vacate its office in Moscow's Potapovsky Lane and switch off its servers on November 9. It also promised to publish one final issue.
The newsroom linked the decision to a demand to leave premises it had occupied for about 30 years and to the shutdown of its reader-donation system. According to the journalists, donations stopped being accepted at the same time as the eviction notice arrived, depriving the publication of a source of funding.
Novaya Gazeta accused Russian authorities and security services of a coordinated campaign of pressure. In its statement, the newsroom cited earlier website blocks, the revocation of its media registration, the prosecution of staff, searches and attacks on journalists.
The newspaper was founded in 1993. In September 2026, Russia's Justice Ministry added the online publication Novaya Gazeta to its register of “foreign agents.” The closure announcement concerns the Moscow newsroom, not the separate Novaya Gazeta Europe project.
