Russia's 224th Garrison Military Court ordered the pretrial detention of Captain First Rank Alexei Suglobov, commander of the Baltic Fleet's Leningrad Naval Base. He was detained on October 21, and the court ordered him held for two months on October 23. Lieutenant Colonel Alexei Ionov is also implicated in the case and was likewise remanded in custody.
Suglobov is suspected of accepting a particularly large bribe under Article 290(6) of the Russian Criminal Code. One episode reportedly involved 1.5 million rubles. Investigators believe the money may have been paid in exchange for protection of businesspeople and commercial use of the naval base's land, including the extraction of sand and crushed stone. These are allegations under investigation, not facts established by a guilty verdict.
