The human rights project Political Prisoners Support: Memorial said on October 30 that at least 5,828 people were deprived of their liberty in Russia and Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories in cases it considers to show signs of political motivation.
The project's public database is updated daily. The total covers people whose prosecution Memorial considers politically motivated and is not the same as the narrower list of individuals whom the project has formally recognized as political prisoners.
Memorial regards the figure as a minimum and estimates that the actual number may be at least twice as high. That is the organization's assessment, based on its own counting criteria.
