Mediazona published edited excerpts from the prison diary of businessman Oleg Varyukhin on November 2. Russian investigators have accused him of treason. The entries cover July through September 2026.
The account is based on two notebooks belonging to Varyukhin that his wife, Natalya Pershko, provided to the journalists. In them, he describes detention conditions, difficulty obtaining hygiene supplies and his concerns for his family.
Investigators allege that Varyukhin financed Ukraine's military by paying a mandatory military levy in Ukraine. Varyukhin rejects the characterization of compulsory tax payments as voluntary funding for the Ukrainian armed forces.
