Serbian authorities detained businessman Davor Macura, the owner of Alta banka, in Belgrade on November 2. Serbia's organized crime prosecutor's office suspects him of illegally removing money from a bank vault and estimates the alleged unlawful gains at about 45 billion dinars. Nova.rs was the first outlet to report the detention.
Prosecutors said three people were detained for up to 48 hours. They allege that Macura gained unauthorized access to the vault with assistance from bank employees. He is suspected of abuse of office under Article 227 of Serbia's Criminal Code.
Serbia's National Bank revoked Alta banka's license in late October. The regulator's decision preceded Macura's detention.
