Software used on interactive displays in Moscow schools contains a concealed module that can remotely activate microphones and upload audio recordings. Reporters examined the mesh-agent-lesson-log package after a school employee published a technical analysis and independently confirmed those functions in the code.
According to the research, the software contacts a central server every ten minutes without alerting users. It can record classroom audio and upload it to Moscow’s Department of Information Technology infrastructure. Installation and update logs for the module were found on three displays in different schools between August and October 2026.
The verified capabilities and installation records do not establish how frequently, or on what scale, classroom conversations were actually recorded. Moscow’s Department of Information Technology did not respond to the outlet’s request for comment.
