Alexander Vateechkin, a former head of a correctional center in Moscow, alleged that inmates were allowed to leave the facility unlawfully in exchange for money or work. The allegations appear in documents from a court dispute over his dismissal that were examined by journalists. The court did not establish that a corruption scheme had operated.
According to the reporting, Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) accused Vateechkin of violations when authorizing inmates’ departures. He was dismissed on April 28, 2026, and contested the circumstances of his dismissal.
On August 12, 2026, Moscow’s Nikulinsky District Court rejected Vateechkin’s request to be reinstated.
On November 3, an appeal in Vateechkin’s dismissal case was registered as No. Zh-75785/2026.
