Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has proposed that the European Union agree on a single representative for potential negotiations to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. She set out the initiative in a letter to European Council President António Costa. EU member states have not yet agreed to the proposal.
Meloni argued that Europe risks losing influence over any eventual settlement if its member states continue to pursue competing diplomatic initiatives. A single envoy could present an agreed EU position. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani had earlier made a similar proposal.
